"I hear so many people talk about carboys, airlocks, etc, and chalk it up to my inexperience, but do I really need a special kind of container to do my fermenting in? Wouldnt food-grade 5&6 gallon buckets do the trick, long as theyre covered with an old towel or something? I keep my mash inside, 65-70 degrees.

Travis Hi Travis, Yes they would and they are a very common option. You can generally get them for free or very cheap from just about any place that handles food like a local restaurant, Sams, Costco. Just ask the manager, tell them you are making beer if they ask. I would suggest getting a lid and airlock. You can get these off Ebay, Amazon, or you local beer/wine making supply store for just a few bucks. Maddawgs

"i am doing an 8 gallon batch of wine without a cover or airlock. I usually use the carboys because i like to see the sedement. however, i sanatize a cloth and allow the CO2 blanket to displace the air and protect the liquid. This batch is too large for my fermenting buckets and carboys. I have 1 9 gallon fermenter fron krause---i dont like it or krause but it serves a purpose. my 10 and 20 gallon buckets have grain in them for my next whiskey runs:)"
