I complained of an aromatic smell, then I remembered my college days. Yes, esters of course. In this case, most likely methyl benzoate which is an aromatic acid in the ester family. Fairly confident this is my problem. I didn't carbon filter, but I ordered carbon and am going to make the tube. Two questions, went to home depot for 1 1/2 inch tubing, only thing close is PVC, will that work without adding a taste, otherwise what do I use and where do I get it? I guess that's more than two questions, oh well. Next question: Will the carbon filter catch the compound? We had a little issue with clearing, long story, first time, anxious impatient buddy, so we never cleared the mash. I am clearing from now on, despite what people say.

PVC has only a 'Fair' rating against alcohol. Because you will be using a diluted product, the effects should be minimized. Carbon filtration, assuming that you are using a good quality carbon that is intended for alcohol filtration ,not all liquid phase carbon will work,, then it should clean this up for you.

I spoke too soon, the boiling point is 199 degrees C so that isn't it. I did something new today though with another batch. Instead of catching the run after about 2 ounces, I didn't touch it until it was definately at about 75 degrees which is right for my elevation. i threw away about 5 ounces, but even that made a huge difference in smell. Still waiting for my carbon to ship.
