Question on product Flow during reflux

"Howdy, running a PSII . My first couple runs with hot plate went well. I usually got a quart to quart 1/2 of 80 to 90 % out of a 5 gal wash. Now since I have used propane , and direct H2O from Garden hose (instead of pump for coolant) I seem to have issues. Difficultly keeping equilibrium and I know how much product flow should be , but for whatever reason I will get drip drop drip drop ...... Stop and then streaming streaming (like way to fast) then back to drip drop. Any ideas my product ain't as pure either getting 110 on first cuts and less after . Started with some good runs and it's like Im getting worse. Now my only idea would be maybe overfilled pot ... Too much wash. Could that be my issue? Any response would be appreciated .

Oh and this is happening with NO adjustments being made to top or bottom.... Of rig.

Do a search on hot plates and controllers used to drive them. I seem to remember a few conversations about the way the hot plates cycle that cause the uneven flow.

Based on your comments, I'm assuming you're using a reflux column. After warm up, without any column cooling water flowing, once you get some output back off your heat until you get only a few drops each second. Then cut in your column cooling until the output stops. Let it sit like that for about an hour, then back off your column water until you get maybe 2 or 3 drops/sec. When you're into hearts you can then increase your collection rate a tad and increase your heat a little (just enough to maintain your collection rate -- which should only be several drops/sec -- never more than a "string of beads"). It'll probably take a little practice to get used to your new heat source ... just like driving that rental car.:) --JB
