I made my first run a few days ago, i used propane heat on a 10 gallon reflux still. I started using an easy mash with 2 buckets of 10 Ibs brown sugar, 5 gallons water and a pack of turbo yeast per bucket. My problem is it tastes ok but she burns like hell after you get it down. Is this an indication i am running my still too hot? I slowly brought temp up to 175F and discarded first 8 oz, i was running it hot enough to keep a steady stream coming out of the condensor, i collected 10 quarts first jar proofed at 150 and the last jar proofed at 95. I was not using any copper mesh or anything in the reflux column which would bring the proof up correct? Any help is much appreciated i know i have alot to learn and am eager to gain as much knowledge as i can thanks!

Hello kbarrow07, With no packing in the column the proof of your distillate will drop significantly. Packing allows the higher boiling temperature vapors to condense and return to the bottom of the tower allow and let the higher proof ethanol pass and be collected. With no packing you are getting more unwanted h20 and other congeners.

I know on TV they swill it right out of the jug and right off the worm, but if you want longevity in this hobby cut it or at least make a mixed drink like 95 proof hooch and coke. You ask if your running your still too hot...well was it really pouring out the worm, cause high heat will make it run really fast...think like this, really hot is running really fast and low heat will make it run slower.......( the collection rate I mean ) neither is wrong but each has its place. The mesh in the tower will not elevate the proof, but it will help clean up what you collect so yes.....the mesh is a good thing. IMHO... If you are making a spirit run then you really dont want to collect in qt jars. Smaller jars will allow you to make better cuts and really pick out the good stuff. Now if your intention is to re-run your hooch then pour the heat to it and collect in whatever you like....cause your gonna re-run it anyway. Again neither is wrong just different ways of running your still."

Thanks for the info guys! This really helps, i plan on only doing one run so i will put a little bit of packing in the column and run it a little bit slower. Also i will cut the proof down i had cut it down to 120 but ya live and ya learn. I plan on running another batch tomorrow or within the next few days and let you know how it goes. Thanks again!
