Hi Kane. I am not that worried about the proof of my stripping runs. All you are trying to do is decrease your volume of liquid by getting the ethonol out and leaving most of the stuff you don't want. But to answer your question I have gotten 168 proof to start but that decreases quickly because I run it hot and fast so as not to waste time. Then I take my time on the spirit run and am more concerned with the ABV. Good luck and be safe

Stripping run or spirit run?. All stills are different, your going to get less abv out of a pot still v a reflux still, what still have you got?. 90ABV isn't a myth lol.

i have a rocky top 5 gallon http://www.rockytopstills.com/ so i think it is a pot still not sure it does not have a thumper or a worm i guess its a stripping run as it is the first run / taste great smooth nice i just never have seen anything above 80 abv i use my own modified recipes i use corn and fruit honey molasses and cane sugar / i didnt like regular table top sugar it has after taste i like cane sugar i do recycle my wash and just add water as needed the highest batch i ever started with was 12% abv ps i added 24 inches to the height and i use packing from start up to finish clean up it takes around 5.5 hours yields 1 gallon of 60/65 abv and i ferment around 30 days

The highest I've seen using a pot was 84%. The charge was low wines at 45%.

" Quote:so the way i am running my wash is their any reason to re charge and run it a second time ? If you truly think it tastes ""taste great smooth nice"", then I don't see any reason why you would want to run it again. Just a note on terminology: Since you're running ""real slow"" with a fully packed column, then I would consider it to be a spirit run rather than a stripping run. The sole purpose of a stripping run is to reduce volume. Most folks will run as hard and fast as they can, with perhaps just a small amount of packing (like a single plug). Since your riser is copper, I wouldn't even bother with any packing during a stripping run. When you run hard and fast, your fractions will smear across the run ... so it usually doesn't taste very good."

John is correct, strip fast, spirit slow. It is a potstill, and the condenser is called a liebig . You wont get over 90% with a.pot, its all about refining vapor, over and over and over = high clean abv. My bubbler will do 93~90% the entire run because it refines its through the plates. reckon you should try a low wines run and compare?. I always did strip and then spirit runs with my rum, just made a nicer product. Each to there own and like John said if your happy that's all that matters. Good luck mate.

I usually get about 80-85% with my pot still. My recipe is now about 70% apple, 30% corn. Makes a SWEET whiskey! Low and slow boys, low and slow.
