"Yup I had to do it. I couldn't keep the cooling water cool enough and the distillate was coming out warm on my last run so i decided to call it until this fall when the cooler temps come in. I have a 30 gallon trashcan that i use just for cooling water wrapped around garden hose and many gallons of ice blocks at different times of the run only temporary cooled it. It's okay though i have about two cases of 100 proof on stand by. It's almost football time so i guess it depends on what the Vols do this year as to how much i plan to drink. lol.
Has anyone else had issues with cooling water?"

why don't you just try running the hose straight to the condenser. All it takes is a trickle

"I called it quits till cooler weather too. I use a 55 gal. Rubbermaid tub for cooling water and it got so hot it was steaming. It would be a PITA for me to run house water to the still so I'm just gonna lay low till the fall.

Besides, it's too hot in the garage to get a good ferment."

I had to halt also, It is about 95 in the shop so it is way to hot for ferments. Have to wait for the fall or build some sort of smaller cooling chamber.

"Gentlemen, It may be time to get to work on some small batch rice wines.

Break out one (or two) of your gallon jugs. Get a 6 1/2 stopper with a hole in it for your airlock (from your LHBS) and get to work! :)

I'm sure you can find a cool corner in your basement, or borrow your kid's mini-fridge. You can even put one of your small ice bottles (that you're not using right now anyway) in a cooler with your fermenting rice wash and just swap them out daily.

Anyway, it's a good time to experiment. Rice is cheap. And you can enjoy your homemade rice wine with a few cubes of ice while you sit in the evening cool and ponder the possibliities of a full-blown rice wash when the cool weather returns this fall."

I am lucky with fermenting. the "War Dept." does not mind listening to the bubbles in the kitchen. And now that my pool is up and running I am going to run 12 ft cooling lines right from the pool to my still which I just put in the pool house. I hope it works.

I'm like Hokey, I managed to secure a treaty that allows use of closet space in a guest room.. But, I've nothing in the wash now, couldn't possibly run durin the day in 97+ f temps - the heat from the burner'd alone..make the space just this side o'hades beachfront... And that crap doesn't seem to cool off till after 10p at night around here.. Oh well, the squash and peppers are enjoying it...

From my chair, yes.. Also, what's yer local boilin' point fer water vs 212f, and the offsets you have to apply to know your temp ranges for the wash...And then managing a tad faster than slow and low... ?

I have yet to run a thermometer on my rig. I just bring her up to where she's about to start going, then cut the power in half, and adjust from there. It takes a LOT of babysitting, but it gets the job done well!

Here's a trick for fermentation that you guys will love. Anyone can walk right by it and they'll never know that you're making a batch. Take a little bit of activated carbon and put it in your airlock instead of water. It will keep the batch safe from infection and absorb the fumes that occur during the fermentation process. You can also use a cheap vodka for this method as well.

I tried both of those idea's and neither worked, I could still smell the UJSSM aroma coming from the fermenter. Hopefully it will work better for others.

Well it worked for me. The first time I tried it though I screwed up a little bit and used both carbon and water. The second time I just used carbon by itself and it worked. I was just told by someone that cheap Vodka would work as well. I'll have to try that and see for myself.

Hey Johnny I'm new at distilling (been brewing beer over a year) I live in az my worms in a 3 gal galvanized pail running 2 hose bibs one for drain and one for water in. running my first big batch 15 gals water temp staying around 52 degrees farenheit, but remember im new at this

first big run and learned samething never mind temp guage going by heat of worm and clearness and taste, this website really good im learning you running gas or elec? what are you distilling?
