I have been thinking of replacing my mass of wires and relays/pid controlled still with a PLC. I don't know how to program one. I barely talk simple BASIC.

I surely would like lots of input/help/ I have a system in mind using 3 way solenoid valves and a float switch to separate fore shots, heads, hearts and tails into separate containers. The system would use temperature sensors at different points on the boiler and tower to switch from 220v to 110 volts and activate/deactivate the 3 position solenoid valves.

I'm thinking of trying this device as my learning tool.

Scotty A PLC is a good option to these controls the problem is the price of the hardware and the software, I have built and programmed many machines and systems using PLC's as the control device. The problem with most of the lower cost units is that they only have discrete (digital on/off) types of Input/outputs. In order to bring temperature into the PLC you will need one that has analog inputs either RTD/TC or current. Also with most of the lower cost PLC's they only have a very basic PID algorythm in them so you would have to write most of the programming.

Jerry. i see the on0 off problem but was not sure of it. Thanks I needed that info. I wil definitely stic to tht PIDs to control my distilling 3 way valves. I cant tell you how much i appreciate the info. I suspected the one i looked at were only good for on0off but finally decided thai i just wasnt smart enough to see how to use them to sense temperatures at diferent times and then turn the valves on or off to isolate diferent factions of the alcohol :)

Are there wireless or USB servo controls that could feed to a wireless or USB hub? That could be fed as inputs to a PC/tablet based app that can record and direct actions.

As you said, the proposition is cost...
