I think you may have stopped a little too early.
I did my first spirit run at the and of February just before going on vacation (the only way it would actually be able to age a bit without me drinking it all).
I had 5 gallons of 40% abv and started collecting as soon as my column temp got to 160F and continued until I hit 190F.
I collect in 250ml jars that are numbered. After collection I leave the jars for a day covered with coffee filters to let the gnarlies flash off.
I then line up all of the jars in order and start in the middle. I test drops on a spoon for taste and continue forward until I hit the heads (you can taste and smell the difference).
I then go the other way from the middle until I hit tails and stop.
All of the good jars are then removed from the line. The others are mixed together and stored in large jars for a feints run at a later date.
The good stuff is mixed together and watered down to 60% ABV for ageing.

My first run I ended up with 3 liters of feints and 13 liters of 60% ABV from 6 gallons of 40% ABV.

It's now 2 months old and smells and tastes great!!!! Cool

Was thanked: 15 time(s) in 15 post(s)
"Just wondering....you said you got back just over a gallon, did you make any cuts during or after stillin or did you collect in one big jug??

Did you stop too soon???? Damn after 8 hours and only 3.5 gallons in there I would have to think nothing else worth getting was left in the boiler so my thinking is no you didn't stop too soon.

What makes you think you should have gotten more from the run??, in my opinion a gallon is prolly 4 times as much as you should have gotten, but maybe I misunderstood...."

i did my collections in pint jars, they are airing out now and i will make cuts in a day or so,even tho i had tossed the foreshots on my stripping runs i tossed almost a pint just to be sure,i would think it had some heads in it also.they were not true stripping run as i ran them pretty slow.i liked the taste of the hearts that i added back in.what i just ran tastes quite diffrent, will know more in a few days and plan to age it on oak for at least a month and then have a taste every month for 6 months.not sure why i thought i should have gotten more back just felt turning 2.5 gals into 1 gal
didnt make good sense.hope it ages well.i have several quarts on chared oak and several of white dog so im good for a while, and still have 15gals of ujssm to run.im going to save 3 gals of backset and freez it and start back up in a month, the crappie are biting and the garden needs some love so i will be busy.will let you know how think"
