Hi there,

Question is: At what temp should I start collecting vs. discarding?

Currently if I bring the temp up nice and slow it starts producing right around 160 degrees and will creep through to 173 degrees, where I start collecting. Unless I run the heat high and try and "speed" through the 160 range I'll end up discarding 3-5 jars worth of product prior to reaching the 173 degree mark, by then the ABV% has decreased significantly and I can't help but think I just threw out the bulk of my run...

Any and all info/clarification is greatly appreciated!

yardbird,

Are you running a pot still or a column? It sounds like you're running a pot still.

Regardless, ignore the temps and focus on your collection rate. Collect your heads slowly & speed things up only after you're sure your into hearts. If you're running a column, let it sit with full reflux for a half hour or a little longer, before drawing off your heads.

Another way of putting it is - read and study up on ------- Cuts and Collections of your distillate.

From what I gather from your post, you have a still and created a wash but jumped the gun on how to make and collect a successful run. Search the forum here and you can find all that info.

Try...This is how I collect my run

Thank you both very much for the info! And yes JB, it is a pot still.

I'll continue reading and running! ;)
