I have a cooling managed reflux still. Recently I started having problems keeping a steady temperature and flow of distilate. The temperature at the still head will gradually go down and distilate will stop coming out. Then, it will go back up again and distilate will burp out really fast, then the process repeats itself for the whole run. I used to get 90% ABV. Now it's 70- 75%. After a lot of poking and prodding, and experimenting, it appears that this is being caused by pressure building up in the still. I did a Brandy run recently where I emptied the rascing rings out of it to achieve a lower proof and everything ran great. When I put the rascing rings back in, and ran another sugar wash, the burping returned. Can a few broken rasching rings cause a clog? Does anyone ever replace those things? Any ideas?

Hi Whitesnake40, I have a PSII HC. I use raschig rings in the botom of the tower and copper mesh in the top. Not sure what the problem is. What are you using for heat? Obviously you don't want any pressure build up. If there were a lot of small pieces of rings it could cause a slight blockage and stop things till there is enough pressure to push past them. I'd try using copper mesh and see if that fixes things.
