I just opened an order of SS commercial duty pot scrubbers I got at a bulk wholesale price. Twice the quality and fineness of anything I have seen at the store. They will fit my 3' column about 2' high if I don't tease them at all. My copper mesh is starting to resemble me- frazzeled! Thought I would use a roll or 2 pf the copper at the top ,54' column, for sulphates, and the SS on down. I wanted something I can just toss into the dishwasher to clean- that much copper is a chore. If interested, I think its a limited quantity. I had 3 day delivery.

It wouldn't take but 2 elbows and a bit of pipe to have both cooling tubes an inch or so apart at the top. You will get better results for reflux and ability to increase the amount of packing. As is , you can only pack below the lower 'through tube'. For even better results and versatility, you could make a U in and out through tube setup at the top, and have seperate feeds to the column and condenser. Either way, you could then pack the entire column. That would be the most ideal.

One other potential if you want to stick to this desighn, would be to pack with SS below the first through tube, and rashig rings from there up. I would in either case get one pure copper scrubber to pack around the top through tube to react with any sulpher.

You will get much better results if the column is packed top to bottom, but this desighn will work for you, just with different result..Some of the most knowledgeable distillers only use pot stills. I do to at times, but like a pure vodka or maceration medium when I want.

I used a brita filter for a while. It helped, but with only so-so results, and the filter costs were adding up. I then got a funnel and tube filter with activated carbon, but that was very time consumeing and a real PITA. Now, I just add it to a jug of 50% or so and let it sit a while with an occasional shake or swirl. run it through a coffe filter in a sieve over a funnel. Best results for me, and I just clean the carbon and reuse.
