If I leave out the packing in a reflux still can it be used as a pot still or is the column (36" tall) too tall? Do I really need a pot still? My brother wants to try to make some wiskey and I would like to take a shot at some Tequila is why I ask? Thanks for any help :) |

no it isn't too tall. don't run cooling water to the column, just to the condenser. I would still put a plug or 2 of copper in the column to take out some of the nasties. Let it air out and put it on oak and you will have a whiskey

I concur with dieselduo, that still should do fine for what you want. But as suggested I too would add a few wads of copper mesh and no water to the tower, you'll be happier with the finished product I'm sure.
