Hey All,
A greater oat update is on the way. The fermentators have stopped and I just need to carve out the time to distill. The same with the UJSM.
But for now I have this: my good buddy who has been with me faithfully at all the stages of the UJSM has asked me if he can make a Gin, and how can I refuse?
Armed with everything I've shown and taught him,!, and my still, his plan is to make a sugar wash with Turbo 48, super kleer it and then charge the boiler. Ok so far. Then he wants to leave the short but beaten path of my experience.
Once the boiler is heated and he has collected heads he then wants to cool the boiler, remove the cap, and on top of the single copper scrubber already in side ,at the bottom of the column and just above the boiler, he would put in his rosemary and lemon. He would then replace the column cap, and reheat to hearts and tails.
His whole theory is that he doesn't want the heads going through his botannicals. Now he really wouldn't be making any kind of a gin, but a vodka, yes?
Thoughts on his method?
Thoughts on his recipe? I'm asking a recipe question here, I know, but it's mostly a methodology query.
Should I let let him go to town and watch the procedure, or just let him tell me about it when it's over?
Enjoying his friendship.
Yours,
PJ Lily

PJ, What fun to experiment.

If it were me, I would do a complete run removeing heads and tails, cut it to 40% and run with the botanicals like a pot still with no packing. Some herbs are really hard to clean out of packing and reflux would wash out a lot of the oils and flavors I would think.

Without jumiper, it will be a flavored vodka. Some distilleries use maceration instead..

Can''t wait to hear about the oats.

hey guys,Ive heard of useing fruit/herbs etc. in a thumper, and have always wondered if i could put some fruit in my pot still column to flavor up some neutral spirits. Has anybody tried this, will it work? I always run my pot still column{2'}with 1 ss scrubber in it. It has room for 6 of them,so I have room to put fruit in there.
