although I have read most of the threads on filtering, still a bit confused. Although the neutral spirit I have seems fine ,haven't drank it yet,, seems filtering would be good to do. so what is the deal, will a brita filter work just fine, can they be refilled? I have a bag of charcoal i got from brewhaus, or shuld I just put charcoal in a coffee filter and pour the stuff through it or does anyone have any good ideas on making an easy and cheap effective filter tube?? I have heard to wash charcoal first. Do I just need to wash the charoal with some water first? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know of the vista filter? I could be wrong on the name. My wife cleaned up my shop and now I am unable to find parts of my Charcoal filtering unit.

Hey Davey,
Before you go to all the trouble of charcoal filtering, take your distillate through to sharing with the buddies. My experience has been that all I've needed is to pour my distillate through a coffee filter to give it the crystal clear look.
I too have heard of all of the things to do with charcoal filtering, but never having done it I would wait for someone else's first hand experience.
Hey Whitewater - we still have to get together. This weekend was my birthday and next weekend the boy and I may go sailing... give me another calender weekend good for you and I'll try to make it happen. Nice one on blaming the wife!
Take care.
Yours,
PJ Lily

Davey, I have gone the whole route, Brita, purchased filter tube etc. Now i just put some activated charcoal into a jug- qt, gallon or large carboy, shake or swirl daily, or whenever, and then run through a coffee filter. This works best and easiest for me.

Leave some space at the top or air which helps it somewhat also.
Yes, wash the charcoal first in very hot water, rinsing several times. Do the same after its use in filtering, boiling and rinsing, then drying it in a 350° oven. Surprising how much crap it will take out of even 95%.
