Hello, I have a small plank of oak and last night I started a smoldering fire that was with apple, hickory, and maple to toast and smoke the wood it sounded like a neat thing to try now is that a good enough toast or should I use an oven to finish it ........and would that be good in a rum?

That smokey flavor may do you well. Depends on what profile you are after, and what you are addeing it to. You may want to roast some in aluminum foil in the oven for toasted, and some with a propane torch for charred. Try small batches for a while and see what tasts best to you. Different flavor profilles come out with each process, light toast, heavy toast, charred. And also raw and smoked as you have done. Let us know how it goes so we will know also.
