I have just completed building a reflux still. My question is can I use stainless steel packing for the column? I have read ceramic and copper, but no mention of stainless. Any help would be appreciated..

The general assumption is always copper in the vapor path. the exception being a copper column with Stainless for easy cleanup when exposed to grain greases.

"no idea about steel, but give it a while, lots of folks only check in on the forum once in a while.
I do know the copper helps remove some of the unwanted things such as sulpher compounds, but can be a pain in butt to clean. I hear many people have great results with just ceramic and the ceramic is much easier to clean."

I have used ss scrubbers for years as packing. When I made my new valved reflux I used the expanded copper for packing and like the results better.

"Sorry,I havent checked this for a few days.It depends on your setup. If you have lots of copper in your column, then you can use the SS scrubbers. They are eaiser to clean, but if your running one made of stainless, then go with the copper scrubbers or the copper packing that rick sells. As long as you have a fair amount of copper in the vapor path,It will clean things up. wineo"
