I am on my third batch of rum made from 'feed store mollasses. Take 5 gal mollasses mix in 12.5 gal water add a good wine yeast. Takes 1 to 2 months to ferment. Makes about 4 gal of dam good rum.

Do you run the mash through the still afterwards just like you would for spirits or do you do something different? I have a reflux still and would love to try and make some rum. Also will turbo yeast work?

There are many different grades and types of molasses. Some of the ones added to stock feed also have other additives present which arent always conducive to a good rum flavour. As pointed out by anonymous, the easiest solution often to try out what you can get is simply that - try it out, and see what the result is like. Where possible, try not to use a turbo yeast. You want more of a beer yeast to contribute to the flavour. The turbos give a nasty flavour if you include their heads & tails ,as you do when collecting rum,. I normally do a molasses-rum brew straight after doing a homebrew beer - using all the sludge left in the fermenter as the yeast source. Tony

bakers yeast makes nice rum also. feed store molasis is fine at least some of the time. it varies a lot and is not labelled well. If it tastes both sweet and bitter about like grocers blackstrap it seems to work good. 8 lb sugar 5 lb molasis T miracle grow 20 grm citric. mix molasis sugar 1 gallon water and citric in pot bring to boil then simmer 20 minutes. Ad remaining water to five the fertilizer and pitch when temp is right. Bring over rough then age with a few splints of red oak scorched black with a torch a couple weeks for color and flavor. A#1

I only made rum once so far and it turned out excellent. I used 2 ltrs of fancy molasses and 8kg of brown sugar and a package of Gert Strand Distillers Yeast. I'm not a rum drinker myself so I really don't know good from bad. But I gave away a few bottles to people who know their rum and all the feedback I got was very positive. I'm more of a whiskey drinker myself, but I gotta admit that rum is very smooth.

I found feedgrade molasses for 8 cents a pound with 80 brix -- made 4 - 5 gallon batches on monday. the problem is as of today one of the four was still bubbling away and the other three had stopped. I poured some yeast nutrient in two and they started right back up instantly.......the last one I left untouched as a control group. has anyone experienced something like this? I used 1.25 gallons of molasses in a 5 gallon wash with no extra sugar added.
