"Hi

As usual looking for easy way out to rid output of nasties. (smell / taste)
Used black label and turbo 48 yeast so far.
Will non-turbo yeast produce a cleaner output?
I realize it may take longer for ferment but would like to try something non-turbo if it means a better smell/taste.
where can I get non-turbo yeast and how do I know how much to use.
remember I am lazy so nothing too complex.

FYI - if you order a gray kangaroo now you will not get it - spoke to them today and it will be about a month before they start shipping again. Bummer.
they promised me some extra bonus gift(s) If I did not ask for a refund and wait. we'll see."

"Wineo can help out here on the non turbo wash. Turbo is easy but it smells. Always rack off as many times as needed to get rid of lees. This helps some. A gravity wine filter helps. use a polishing pad and if it plugs up before 1/3 carboy its not clear enough to run yet. Keep racking and sparkaloid again if needed. that all helps.

I take it you want a stop gap, until they ship. Dump a magnum of dark red wine in then fill up with very clear wash. It seems to cut some smell and taste by trapping things in the leftovers.

I don't think the kangaroo folks were ready for the youtube response they got. people not even connected to them are posting thier own kangaroo vids."

Wineo and I botth have had great experiance useing Lavlin EC 1118 yeast, about .85 a package. However, if doing a pure sugar wash, you will have many other chores, adjustint ph, adding nutrients and vitimins and etc. Take it to the same stressed level of 18% and you might still get the off flavours and tasts. First try a 14% sugar rerment with your turbo. These are a totally balanced mix of yeast and nutrients to get the job done perfectly. No matter what yeast u use, and how perfectly you balance the ph, nutrients etc. if you stress the yeast into high alchohal production you will get some off's.

Try the turbos at the reduced % and you will get just as clean a ferment, and much faster as any thing else you can do. Next main thing would be to rack it somewhat clean and add some sparkaloid or other. I don't rack it, i just add sparkoloid and then rack, and do a stripping run, saveing all for the final stripping run. Storeing on baking soda, and then adding some canning salt at distilling time for the spirit run. Works clean enough for me that i don't have to filter. I do sometimes anyhow."

Hey Johnny, If you're not into horses, or wrestling i can perhaps give you a context here.

When you have a ferment that is finished or close, the yeast and solids will settle to the bottom. What you want to do is evacuate the clear liquid that is above the yuk sitting on the bottom. Many will rack into a secondary carboy and let it settle again and more clean. Some add clearing agents as i do like sparkaloid or others to speed the settling.

brewhaus has a SS racking tube, with a baffle so as not to engage the lees left behind. Quite cheap and works great. Also get some clearing agent while there. I like sparkaloid. Saves a week or more."

"Hi

Ran 80 proof neutral thru a brita 5 times and significantly reduced odor.
Did a shot for shot compare with absolut and both wife and 1 Liked my neutral better. I am pleased.

Wife did seem to think that when neutral gets mixed with campari (her usual drink of choice) some odor comes back - maybe something to do with reaction with campari ? Still tasted good enough for her to keep drinking though. maybe the gray kangaroo will do a better job - will report on findings when I get it."

Johnnym, I started out with the brita filter and with good results. I found that the max usage for one of the filteres was was a 3 gal. pass, whether it was 1 gal three times through or 3 gal. one time through. Kinda pricey.

I have a tube filter, but its a real PITA, so what i do now is take a gallon jug, toss in a rounded cup of washed carbon from brewhause, and shake it everyday for a week or so, and open the top each time for oxygen. Filter through a coffee filter, in an 8 inch ss tea strainer, changeing the filter as it slows.

I will take the carbon and gently boil it, and get something like an Italian dressing floating on top. This is out of 95% pure cut to 85 proof for filtering. If its not perfect for you, just add the boiled, washed and baked carbon back in for a few more days. I've never had to repeat.

Cheap, easy, works great.

John"

"Just as a side note, if you're looking for other types of yeast ... homebrewing websites have a ton of yeasts to choose from. I'm new to this hobby, but if there are probably more then 5 good solid yeasts that will get your mash above 15%.

If you're looking for the cleanest ferment with the least afterflavor, I'd have to say champagne yeast would be the way to go if you don't like the Turbo yeast varieties.

Keep in mind though, the regular yeast does not have all the extra additives that the Turbo does.

racking is just siphoning your brew off of settled sediment and running it into another container."

The Super Start Distillers yeast is cheap, fast, clean, and tolerates a high percentage of alcohol.
I believe you can get it by the pound right here from Brewhaus
