"I was going through the directions and as I am reading the manual, and looking the parts over, I noticed that the column extension has a screen on it. Does that screen get connected to the kettle or the column?

The screen goes at the very bottom, where it connects to the keg. This is a new addition, so as to hold rashig rings, and will also hold the cu if not tight enough to hold in place and open gaps between rolls.
