"When I did my distillations at home with glassware, (4L reactor hooked to a thunder pot to the condenser then to a cooled receiver), I used a hot plate with a magnetic stirrer. A magnetic stirrer works by placing a magnet shaped as an agitator in the reactor, (pot) then placing the reactor on the hot plate (with stirring function) turning on the stirrer first then the heat. That cuts the heat up time in half!!! These types of hot plates can be aquired at a lab supply store. they cost more but it is worth it to cut the time. The magnet used is made for such purposes and not just a magnet you have laying around at home. check out WWW.vwr.com. that would be top of the line. The other idea is to use the stirring function only for the fermentation."
