"Hello:

Would like to introduce my self i am new to the hobby.

My question is i am getting ready to run a 30l batch of Rum 16lbs brown sugar 1 bottle of Robust Molasses Prestige Vodka yeast bottled water.

I have the still set up in pot mode. The top of the column is packed with copper mesh between the cooling pipes. just a little bit of copper i thought would be good.

Ok Questions

1: throw away 2oz of forshot's / heads is that enough for safety?
2: Should i distill the run a second time with the the middle run only?
3: Do you carbon filter Rum ?
4: how long would you let the rum sit before sampling.
5: How much distillate should i expect for a 30l wash ?

Thank you for the hepl i will let you know how it goes."

I have another question left that needs answering. My brown sugar and molasses is all most done fermenting . I have a slight oil slick on top of the wash . I racked off the middle leaving the oil and bottom yeast remans on the fermenting bucket . The wash is in a 5 gal carboy and is slightly fermenting (little ) bubbles. When can i distill the wash and what the hell is the oil looking stuff i was super clean with the wash what could it be ??????

The forum seems to be slow right now- I think that everyone is recovering from the summer. Wink

Check the specific gravity of your wash. It is quite possibly not fermenting, but degassing (the carbon dioxide absorbed during fermentation is coming out).
