"When using in pot still mode, does it help to put both lengths of the upright pipes together (like when running in reflux mode)? Or is it better to just use the one peice? Was doing a rum wash and later a whiskey run and wasn't getting much output even at the 80-82C range - then went up to 85-88C and got a pretty good rate, but it was pretty low ABV, (around 70%)

And does how cold should the water be going thru the condenser? I am using water in a cooller with lots of ice in it. Too cold?"

Because with pot distillation you are trying to bring more components across, you will run at a much lower proof than with reflux distillation. You will also want to use only the top of the column, not both pieces. With both pieces what you have is a column still.

and is it ok to use ice water? in other words does it matter how cold it is in the consdensor part? Is colder better or just have it cold enough to condense?

Yes, the colder the better, in general. Although, as long as your distillated is coming out cool to warm (not hot) you are fine.
