"I'm new to this great hobby and have my first suger wash just bubbling away gwtting ready for its first run on the pro ext II and I have been reading and reading trying to get it down before hand.

Question 1. If you use copper filling must it be all copper or can you mix copper and the richling? (mostly copper)

Question 2. Can you filter the hot distilate thro active carbon as it comes out of the condenser or does it have to cool.

Many thanks for any comments........BigGrin"

"1. For a sugar run its not very important to have copper in your column. What you're more interested in is high surface area for the vapor to contact with and condense on. I find mesh works better than rings in terms of surface area.

2. The distillate will (at least should not) come out hot. This will be a sign of you not running enough coolant through the top of your column and will result in a relatively low ABV%. High ABv% alcohol does not filter well through carbon. Its recommended to cut the alcohol to around 50% before carbon filtering."
