"Hi,
I am new!! Ran my first run and it had a blue color to it....what do you think it is?
I started with 5 gal water, 10lbs sugar, 1 pack prestige 48hr turbo yeast, 1lime and liquor quik distillers yeast nutrient w/ag.
When fermentation was complete I added brewhaus sparkolloid, left one day and ran it in a simple pot still. (Sg 0.990)
Threw first 4oz away, set next 8oz aside, kept next 40oz
120 proof and set next 90oz aside and stopped collecting
80 proof.
My question is it had a blue color, what would cause this and is it ok to drink? (hope so I had to try it)

Cleaned and ran 2 test runs with water before starting.
Followed recipe with the amount of nutrients called for.
Still confused about what is causing the blue color.
Not sure what to do next! Don't want to make another blue bach (it dose tast good)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!"

The blue is copper salts and you should not drink it. It is poisonous. It is usually caused by a high content of nitrogen in the wash, which when distilled reacts with the copper in the still and creates copper slats, AKA copper sulphate. Most times a turbo yeast is the culprit. The other common cause is dirty copper in the ethanol vapor path or other contaminates. |

Here is one: http://homedistiller.org/forum/...copper+sulphate#p6897070 I suggest that you do a cleaning run with vinegar & If you are going to used the Turbo Yeast follow the directions on the sachet and don't add anything else to the wash. |

Acidify your wash as it goes into still. Alkaline conditions promote the excess nitrogen conversion to NH3 (ammonia); which reacts with 1) sulfates and then copper 2) direct with copper.
Acidic conditions inhibit the ammonia formation.
