"Got a question about reflux vodka.
I am making sugar wash vodka with turbo yeast.
Output is 180 proof and I cut with distilled water. After the cut it is soaked in activated stone charcoal for a week and filtered through a charcoal filter. It taset good but after 10 days it gets a strong after taste that is unplesant. I put it back through the charcoal filter and it cleans it up but the bad taste comes back. Any ideas would be great. RT
PS Still is a reflux all stainless except some teflon tubing electric heat source controlled at top of collunm."

Well you did not mention making any cuts so, I imagine your alcohol is loaded with fore-shots,heads & Tails.

Not to mention that Turbo Yeast produce lots of off taste due to the high %ABV of turbo washes and the large amount of nutrients and high temps that they ferment at.

Quit using Turbos, make your wash at 10% ABV and make good cuts and you will be surprised.

You wont need to carbon filter.

Like a lot of things in life if its to good to be true it isn't. I hate I bought a lot of turbo. What do you think about using less turbo for the nutrients and add distillers yeast? RT

Well can let you know in a few days on whether the tomato paste sugar wash with distillers yeast can make a decent neutral. Was gonna run it today but wound up with a case of the crud so just drinking artificial bourbon and resting. Believe the prevalent view of some who are in the know..is it takes bread yeast and accompanying low abv wash to make a good neutral. I do not think it would be a good idea to mix the turbo with the distillers as both would translate into a high abv wash used by themselves or in tandem. This be under favorable conditions..enough sugar etc. How much of the Turbo did you buy?

I think without looking it would be eight pounds. It will go on ebay. Thanks for all the help. I will put a low ABV wash on and give it a go. RT

Sounds like a plan. I was going to run the tomato paste sugar wash with distillers yeast today but stuck it with the checker gizmo and it was over the limit on unconsumed sugar and bubbling a little. Been going 9 days. Sweet Feed wash which went on at the same time was in about the same configuration. Guess I give them another week and see what happens.

Well got the neutral proofed out at 120 or close. Whew that is a tummy warming area..lol. Anyway tastes like the highest priced vodka in Foat Wuth..lol. Starting another ferment of the same stuff as we speak. Fresh outta paste so thought a can of tomato sauce should work ok. Save a trip to the store etc. Think it would make a full gallon if diluted to 90-100. I wound up about 3/4 gallon proofed. Did not toss any heads or tails. Smelled good all the past the fores. Thanks for sharing that recipe Bayou..and thanks to Birdwatcher for his input.

Glad i could help ya out, but you really should make good cuts. I know I get some viscous fore shots.

Of course all the ethanol I produce is strictly for fuel use and no cuts what so ever are needed for ethanol fuel but if i did make cuts the final product would best described as smelling and tasting like the brand ""Ever Clear"", This is no coincidence though, because ever clear is 95%ABV ethanol.OhMyGod"

"Hey BR, when your makin a fuel wash is it always the Birdwatchers recipe and do you always do a slow reflux to remove the water??
Do you run it unmixed with gasoline or just straight in the gas can??
I want to try to make some fuel for my mower just so I can run my still -- I know kinda childish but fun for one is work for the other. BigGrin
N E way if you would give me a quick rundown of the layout that would be appreciated greatly. Thanks in advance."

Yeap its always sugar & water wash, I do strippin runs & then slow reflux to get high %ABV alcohol. I usually take a gallon of gasoline and add a quart or so of 95% ABV ethanol to it.

Keep in mind though, in the USA to distill alcohol for fuel you have to have Alcohol Fuel Producer permit from the TTB."

Cool thanks pal..I got permission from my wife, so thats almost as important as the permit...right!!! My plan is to make 5 washes and run em hard and fast. Then pack my tower full of scrubbers and run it on the slower side of collections. Of course its on its way to being summer in Fl. so it might take me juuuuust alittle bit longer than it takes you to get my test jug of fuel filled. N E way thanks for the info.
