"Any reason not to ask Rick to weld a 3'' tri-clamp ferrule, http://www.brewhaus.com/...mp-Ferrule-P954C130.aspxto the top of a PSII HC column to accept a 3"" tri-clamp cap with a temperature probe, http://www.brewershardwa...erature-Probe-End-3.htmlor a 3"" tri-clamp cap with, say a 1/4"" compression adapter (to accept a temperature probe), http://www.brewershardwa...ion-Adapter-TC20C14.htmlin place of the rubber bung? Any potential (negative) impact to the performance of the PSII HC column with this type of modification? The BrewersHardware.com caps are smaller, but I'm sure 3"" versions are available."

MD I was considering making another removable cooling coil that would be installed in a 1 foot removable extension to possibly have the tower act as another style of still.

I could insert my digital temperature probe into the rubber bung. However, you have this beautiful stainless steel column with a rubber bung in the end of it. Even the name, ""bung"", turns me off. I wanted to make sure that the rubber bung isn't intended to serve as a form of pressure relief valve."

I'm 5.10 and had to get on a step ladder to put it in. I think Rick can put a ferrule and cap with tri-clamp ( you should ask him). When properly run the PS2HC should not build any pressure but if you have a blockage somewhere the bung will just pop out whereas if you have the top clamped you may turn your still into a bomb. What I was going to do was drill a second hole in the cap and place a marble over it, any pressure will just pop the marble off. Maddawgs

Where would the column most likely get blocked? I assume folks don't have any type of pressure relief on the kettle itself. Is the top of the column the only point at which you'd consider the need for pressure relief? Thanks Maddawgs."

Thanks Maddawgs. Hi Jas, The digital temp probe that comes with the PS2HC is a simple push thru. In Bayou Ruler's mods, he had switched to a wired. I may do the same just to bring the readout down to eye level. Blockage could be anything from to much packing to little crawly things nesting in your liebig condenser (it has happened to others). I'm not really much newer at this than you are (just got my unit yesterday) but I would think you could place a pressure relief anywhere. Pressure like any form of force, seeks the path of least resistance. I think (and I could be wrong) that BH uses the bung area because it works. Maddawgs

Hi Scotty, Just a different way of accomplishing the same goal. The lm's and vm's are each a liitle better at different parts of the process and a cm is a good compromise between the two. Maddawgs

i cant really visualise that they are better in any way-i would like lots of discussion on this topic. Maybe then i could understand how either one could do any better than a slow run with a good CM ric

Maybe then i could understand how either one could do any better than a slow run with a good CM ric I think from descriptions in "The Compleat Distiller" (and I could be wrong) that one compresses heads better and one compresses tails better. The cm does a pretty good job when run correctly of both so it is a good compromise. Going with your original thought to have the ability to do a quick change and do any of the 3 would be a pretty good mod (for those tinkering types). Me I think for what I want to do which is neutrals, the PS2HC is perfect and I have the option of switching it to pot mode (another pretty good mod) pretty quickly if I want to do a whiskey or rum run. The only upgrade I would consider in the future would be to add a fluted plate or bubble cap column for high abv whiskey type runs. Maddawgs
