Many times. Started when just an infant, rideing down with my grandfather. Then I got to an age, where I began to understand why he took me there.BigGrin

Now its time for me to start takeing my grandson."

"I"ve started another Rum batch , sticking to easier recipes till my experience lever increases, and this sailor loves Rum.
As this ongoing learning process goes, I"ll do the striping run. I"m going to remove the "rings" from my column and run it, blend the 1st run with h2o 40% and run it again with "rings" at the slower rate.

I"ve determined in previous run I"ve been way to anxious for the finial product. So this time I"m letting the fermentation pot set and clear, to slow this process down I"ve purchased a couple bottles of Ron Zacapa 23 year aged rum from Guatemala
I"m picking up 3 5gal carboys today and will start a batch of Vodka as well
Last week I acquired a stainless steel pool filter that"s been converted to a simplistic still having a copper tube out the top into a coil that sets in to a cold water tank . I"m thinking this could work well for stripping any thoughts

I was googly eyed over one of those a while back, but could not get the owner to part with it. I especially like the multiple crank down knobs for the lid.

A bit small for a boiler. But an excellant choice for a thumper."

"TURTLEBERG,

I'm not that familiar with rums. However, yes strip it, but then I would think you would run your spirit run pot still style also to keep the flavors. Toss the heads to the feints container, and collect the tails in small increments. You may want to add some of them depending on taste to the hearts for better flavor also.

Are you adding the dunder back and reusing the lees? That is common procedure for makeing good rum and gaining more flavor.

Others, more expert on rums can guide you better."

"well ,I got in touch with the guy that sold me the still and he claims that the glass is perfectly safe (lol) .cliams he sold 100's and never had any trouble or complaints. He did get a bit nasty when I told him guys on a forum said it was a fire hazard. I think I bought it from the wrong place ,I was suposed to get a filter with carbon with my order ,never got it , was suposed to get some yeast never got it , then I asked how much copper packing I should have gotten and he said 4-5 pieces well there is only one with my order and he claims I am wrong but I just looked for the 3rd time . I ordered a fermenter from him at the same time and it turned out to be a dirty used dr pepper plastic drum with dirt and grease all over it ,he claimed that it is xmas time and they dont have time to take care of all the stuff and said sorry . I think I got ripped off by this guy .I am gonna try the still when I get the packing and everything I was suposed to get then take it from there.thanks again for the help
place I bought it from

hi catfish,
i would advise using Brewhaus for future purchases. rick runs this forum and the fact that we post other sources(some free) for his supplies tells you what kind of man you are dealing with. and i have purchased a lot of products from him and have always been pleased.
the one time i received the wrong product he fixed it in a timely manner. he is also a respected member in a few other home distillation groups i belong to.

"Sorry Catfish, Wish you had posted your intentions of getting one of these before you did. There was much discussion on this outfit in artisan distillers forum. They have been shut down on ebay several times but open under a new ownership. Many ordered from them, got charged but never received anything. Your service sounds pretty typical.

If you bought it from a local dealer, I would at the least report to better business beurea sp. Or demand your money back else you could take it to small claims court. Its not illegal to own that pretty hat rack or essential oil distiller. Plain theft!"

"If you don't get any satisfaction,, at least you can mod that thing for parts and such. I'd cut that thumper off and install a union to join your liebig to the lyne arm.
With that bigger boiler you will be better off just double running any way. With a full boiler charge, your likely to stop your run twice to prevent that small thumper from flooding (if it doesn't break first).

Did not mean to be a party pooper catfish. But I think you can already see where the collective wisdom is going with your unit evaluation.

Brewhaus has a first rate reputation. Too bad you did not solicit opinions prior to purchase.

Good luck and don't let this take the wind out of your sails."

you could put some cooling lines in the column and extend the column by a few feet and make a good product. i f**ked up and bought 2 stills first. if you don't have the skills or resources to adapt your still get in touch with rick at Brewhaus and ask for his help. he will treat you right and tell you how to use what you have with what he has to sell. i don't know your cash situation but if you can afford it they make a hell of a good reflux column. the ee2 (what i use)is great. i have heard the ee2 hc is better. i didnt want to say anything about your rig when i saw it but i have heard bad things about stilldrinking in newdistillers and distillers a few years ago. that is why i keep saying don't get discouraged. i know i keep mentioning brewhaus and it is because he will treat you right.
