"I have a 1 foot extension at the bottom of my 2 inch column. i added that so i could have a place to pack the copper mesh. The regular 2 inch column with the 2 coolong tubes at the top has a plate screwed to its base with holes in it. Packing the top with copper is a pain. I find raschig rings easiest to pack the top section as they can easily be poured into and out of the top.

THE QUESTION????????
i have been packing the raschig rings to just under the cooling tubes. would adding enough raschig rings so as to cover both tubes work any better???

Yes, but some copper balls packed around them will work better as they will help dissapate the cold from the tubes better and increase reflux dramatically. They are a much better thermal conductor."

"Gotcha:)

Another thought that i have is to have 2 more 1/2 inch stainless tubes installed near the original 2. There is plenty of room.

What do you think of that?????BigGrin"

Personally, I think that would be an excellent idea. Twould increase reflux and allow much tighter and more pure cuts. Yeah, I would recommend that."

Bingo - added 6 copper scrubbers around my cooling pipes on my HC2 Pro. Made all the difference in the world. Now cooling management works spot on."

Somewhere way back when, Brewhaus had just come out with the HC unit and I bit into it. First few runs were awfull. Wrote into Brewhaus and rick told me to toss in some gravel, broken glass aor crockery as boiling chips, then insulate my column with mud, clay, paper mache, beach towel or whatever and to pack my through tubes with copper balls. Next run went from really nasty stuff to the best ever.

They have made immense improvements in the HC unit since and I recently bought a new one. Now I can run 2, one doing stripping s and the new one doing the spirit run. I'm cheating. I only use the top half of the old one for the stripping run, like a pot still, and add the bottom to the new one, so I have basically a 6' column of 3"". talk about quality. I use kegs and propane.

My distilling time is very limited, so have to make the most of it. Sure works for me."

I would be afraid the copper coated BBs would quickly degrade like the copper coated scrubbers. That would ruin a good batch. If you can't get pure copper, use SS scrubbers, a next best choice. But not as good.

mw2 - where did you get the ferrules & how hard were they to attach (weld I assume)? I'm picking up my kegs today & I'm moving my 3"" column over. I'm going with water heater elements though, as the wife is deathly afraid I'll burn the house down with propane. BigGrin"

Are you sure they're copper? I heard you had a lot of big brass balls laying around. BigGrin"

HA! Tell me who told you that and let her show up and I will explain and show her the difference. 2 differnt columns, for a totally different extract. Trying to figure out how to get a triclover hitch to extend length and quality there also. O Well!

As to the coppper balls, I got a lot of surplus withmy Brewhous order for the high capacity column almst 8 years ago. My copper is still good, though I learned early on never to wash it with acid or viniger, or lemon juice. The worse it looks, the better it scubs sulfatesor oxides.

Brass balls indeed, I have a heci or a time getting he lead out.

Mountain Walker, the brass bingo."
