Just curious as to whether anyone throws other stuff into their mash? My uncle says he always throws a couple pounds of raisins into his 40 gallons of mash to smooth it out a bit. Just curious.

"I've used cherries, peaches, persimmons, apples, and sugar pumkin. This year I'm going to try out black berries since I live pretty close to a creek that has about a half mile of berry bushes lining the banks. You can use just about anything your imagination can come up with. I mean come on, Jin-juniper berries? Somebody had to be pretty desperate to try that. So go for it and run whatever it is through the pot still. If you don't like the flavor then run it through the reflux and make it a neutral."

Dang good idea, Bushy. Cooking my first mash as we speak, 5 lbs corn, 4 cups all bran, 10 lbs sugar, and 5 gallons water. We'll see how it turns out. Gonna pot still it.

curtsat..try all those things you mentioned in your hooch. Thats where the real smoothing and flavor addition will come into play, you know after you still and when your letting it sit and age a bit try adding all those goodies there. I think they will carryover somewhat in the wash but in my opinion the finished product is where the goodies will shine.
