Getting ready to start some fermentations. What are good supplies to have on hand besides sugar, water, and yeast. I'm making a shopping list and I want to be sure to get the right things.
Thanks, Maddawgs

Hi Scotty,
Thanks. Do you have any recommendations for the sanitizers, ph chemicals, and yeast nutrients & energizers? I have pretty much all the other supplies. You get a lot with Rick's starter kits. Now where do I send your samples:)
Thanks, Maddawgs

Hi Heeler,
I got a pretty nice one off Ebay but I do like your two variations so you may have a customer.

I really dont think that the sanitizers are that much diferent-- Most nutrients and energizers have the same ingredients. I think the most important thing is a starter bottle and aerating the cooled wurt for about 1 hour before pitching.

May want to consider a blindfold for your wife...... plausible deniability! Wink

A good book or magazine to read while you are running!

"md,

Here are some things I use regularly:

- Pyrex measuring cups
- Extra buckets
- Unscented dish soap
- Baking soda
- Bar mops/dish towels (that are mine, not the wife's)
- StarSan sanitizer (I really like this stuff)
- Heavy working gloves (suitable for handling very hot objects)
- A case or two of mason jars (I use 32 oz, but would rather have smaller ones)
- A case (or two) of one gallon glass jugs (for feints, low wines, etc.)

Depending on what piques your interests, you might want to keep some of the following in your distilling cabinet. They're all very inexpensive, yet sometimes invaluable:

- Sparkolloid (an oz or two)
- Iodine
- DAP or ""Yeast Nutrient""
- Carton of epsom salt
- Citric acid (a few oz)
- Calcium Chloride (a few oz)
- Calcium Sulphate (gypsum ... a few oz)
- Tomato paste (box of 6 oz cans) ... Mother Nature's ultimate yeast nutrient Wink

Edit: I forgot one really handy thing: a box of toe tags. I prefer these much better than things that stick."

As a side note, I like Ball mason jars in the quart size. They have markings on the side in ounces and milliliters. I normally do not fill a quart jar. I'll stop when it hits around 600ml.

Kerr jars do not have the markings.
