Hi Gang:

Yesterday was our Moonshine and Music meet here in 'West By God' VA. There were a number of shinners who showed up. Beside the BBQ Dogs and Beans provided we had two stills running making a rye whiskey and a vodka. People brought some blackberry hooch, lemon hooch, rum, vodka, and some excellent bourbon freshly rescued from a barrel after a few months of captivity. Anyway, I thought I'd share with you guys some pics of the stills etc.

Is this stuff crazy or what! I love it!! The last still is a commercial electric job one of the guys bought from a hospital. I have more pics of it if you guys are interested, just let me know.

This was an excellent time. It's really fun to meet with other folks who are into the hobby and share stories and ideas. I look forward to doing it again in GA come September.

Cheers!

Elricko, What a blast that must have been. To be able to gather and share, is what makes this so much fun, and I'll bet it won't be a one time event. Wish I were closer.

And obviously you can still function today!

elricko,
sounds like a great time. and you know i haven't heard the phrase west by god virginia since i was a kid and we had another kid transfer to our school from west virginia. every time i think of that phrase it brings back memories. but any way, you mentioned some blackberry hooch. man, my grandpa had just asked me yesterday if i could find him a good recipe for that very thing. so, could you give me a recipe fer some blackberry hooch??? or is it a proprietary secret. well it looks like yall had a good time and had some really neat stuff. if you get together again before you move to florida and don't mind a virginian coming by let me know, i'd enjoy meeting and sharing if i could.

Buz:

You're surely welcome anytime! We were talking about doing it once a month or once every other month. I'm hoping I get to go to another one before my house sells but you never know. Either way you need to get with WVRIVER here on the forum as he is the one who sets it up. If you need a place to stay you can stay here, that is if I still live here.

As far ,or 'fer' since you are a fellow Virginian, as the recipe for Blackberry Hooch, I didn't make it I just enjoyed it.

Maybe we can get WVRIVER to post the recipe on the forum here since he made it.

All I know is that it was in a mason jar and sitting in an ice bucket. I could have sat there and sipped the whole thing. Well, maybe not the whole thing as I would have had to stand up at some point then it would have all been over. But by jingles it was delicious.

I'm dying to try some of that oat hooch ya'll been going on about.

Cheers!

buzzman,

Here is a recipie, I copied to my recipie file, as I have 2 gal. of canned blackberries,Home canned. Everything I have read indicates no or very little flavor will carry over from a blackberry wine distillation. Can't vouch for this as I haven't tried it myself yet.

4 cups crushed blackberry's
2 cups sugar
2 cups grain alcohol
4 cups water
Combine all ingredients, shake well. Steep for 7 days, shake again.
After 2 months, strain and bottle.

Wineo,

Please let me know how it turns out. I love it when someone else is useing their hard gained berries, and those are hard gained, before I waste mine.

Just kidding, I would have already tried this, but other needs have pressed, and they are safely canned. If this works, I will follow in your footsteps, and thanks for trying it out.

Elricko,
Ended with 2 gallons 90 proof rye has good whiskey taste. The newbie had problem controlling heat output of electric he needs different controller. Someone took the rest of the blackbery home to his wife I bet. Most of the beer was gone. We ate the rest dogs and beans cleaning up the next day.
Thinking of next batch I need to find corn sugar at good price...I need recipe for apple pie just have not found that yet. Looking forward to next meet and try something new and get to alk to few people.

This was first one. This was second one. We did one few months ago mostly afternoon thing in garage. It was not to formal just few people with brews and stills. That may be good name for the group. you're more than invited. I'm sure we will have another. We have about 7 people in the area who we know. 4 have mile high distilling system towers. First time we had 7 people. Saturday about 16-18 people.

WVriver:

I thought newbie might have trouble with that controller. He was using one that was rated at 600W. I told him that he woud have to get one that goes up to 1500W. Maybe he will now. Tell him to check Ebay.

Sorry, I didn't take your blackberry hooch. Not that I didn't want to. However had I known someone else was gonna swipe it I might have considered it.

Check Ashland Beverage. They have corn sugar. It isn't cheap but it doesn't cost an arm and a leg either. At least they have it. I want to make a mix of 80% corn and 20% of your rye and put into some wood. So save me a quart of your rye if you will.

Brenden, we would be delighted to have you join us sometime.

Cheers

Brenden,

I am not a participant in this meet, so I have no say whatsoever. However, you must understand and appreciate, that you would place them in increased jeapordy. While a DA might turn his or her back to a few elders meeting and enjoyeing themselves, just the hint of an underage fellow, could make headlines for he or her. And place the people you want to visit in terrible jeapordy. When you consider these aspects, I am sure you will reconsider, and wait a few years. I know they would love to welcome you and help you, but the risk is awesome, and could be really damageing to them and to this hobby. Please don't ask them to put themselves into that risk.

Thanks, and sorry

ok ya I am glad to get some feedback on that, been checking my messages obsessively, but ya I think I will be able to deal with that just fine and yes I do understand where your coming from I just think it would be nice to meet with fellow distillers and share advice but ya again no problem with waiting hopefully by then I will have a little more experience but ya harm is the last position I would want to put them so yes I will take your advice and wait at least I have this form to talk on and this will also help because I will have a couple more harvesting seasons to experiment with

Thanks Brenden,

Since I can't get there either, you and I can still enjoy it vicariously, and learn and appreciate. Dang laws are tough enough without haveing to worry about a man too old, or a man too young to make headlines. I'll drink a toast to you tonight.
